Description: This data set defines the protected watersheds in Union County that supply Lake Twitty and Lake Lee. Watersheds are an area supplying runoff water to a master stream and its tributaries. The source for this data was taken from areas defined by the USDA-NRCS office in Monroe. Staff at the USDA-NRCS office defined the areas on USGS 7.5 minute quad sheets by observing the contour lines published on the quad sheets. The Union County Planning Department was responsible for storing and displaying these maps to the public. The Union County GIS Department then took the USGS maps to digitize the watershed boundaries. The quad sheets were referenced in the North Carolina State Plane coordinate system in ArcInfo and digitized from digitizing table. Once the boundaries were digitized they were built into polygons and populated with the revelant data.
